Position Announcement

Foster an inclusive and accessible environment for students and visitors with disabilities through counseling and advising individuals regarding their rights and responsibilities under the ADA, evaluating access barriers, and determining reasonable accommodations through an interactive process. Occasional evening/weekend work required.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Counseling: Counsel and advise students/visitors regarding their rights and responsibilities under the ADA. Use professional judgement to determine and approve reasonable accommodations for students/visitors based on an interactive process including the review of disability documentation, history of accommodations, and student report. Evaulate and apply assessment data from psychological evaluations, individual education plans, ADHD assessments, and related disabiity documentation to determine disability eligibility and accommodation needs.
  • Caseload Managment: Monitor effectiveness of ongoing accommodation use, approve accommondation renewal requests, and provide student support including referral information for academic, vocational, medical, emotional, and other services offered at the university. Evaluate individual student access barriers and apply disability research and case law to higher education as necessar
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with UVU staff/faculty, community partners, and licensed professionals as needed to determine access barriers, to approve and implement reasonable accommodations, and to ensure university compliance with ADA/ADAAA/ requirements while maintaining student confidentiality as required by FERPA. Provide consultation and training for UVU staff/faculty and community partners as needed for the implementation of accommodations for students/visitors.
  • Record professional case notes to document interactions with students, faculty, staff, and other professionals, disability documentation, approved accommodations, and maintain accurate records as required by office procedures, university policy, federal and state statutes. Document evidence of the interactive process in accommodation decisions.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a master's and two years professional employment related to the summary of duties.

Preferred Qualifications
Four plus years' experience in a role closely related to the summary of duties Master's degree in special education, vocational rehabilitation, counseling, psychology, social work, or a closely related field Demonstrated proficiency in a second language such as American Sign Language (ASL) or Spanish

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the American Disability Act (1990) and the Amendments Act, Vocational Rehabilitation Act, Section 504 (1973), GRAMA, FERPA, HIIPA, and other federal and state statutes and case law.
  • Knowledge of a variety of disabilities, their impact, and accommodations including accessible technology that provide access to an academic environment.
  • Knowledge of best practices in accessibility, accommodation services, and assisted technology.
Skills
  • Excellent listening skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Skilled in the using and learning new/emerging technology and software including accessible technology features.
Abilities
  • Ability to interpret diagnostic information including medical, psychological, and learning assessments to determine reasonable accommodation services.
  • Ability to work with students, faculty, and staff to problem-solve, work collaboratively, and resolve access issues.
  • Ability to stay current in best practices in the field of accessibility services in higher education.
  • Ability to work occasional evening or weekend hours.
  • Ability to use professional judgement to determine and approve reasonable accommodations including accessible technology for students and visitors.
