Position Description
The Locksmith reports to the Manager of Facilities Maintenance and operates under the direction of the shop lead. This position provides essential locksmith services to support the ongoing operations, safety, and maintenance of the university's facilities. The Locksmith plays a critical role in maintaining campus security and operational integrity through the expert management of lock systems, door hardware installation, maintenance, and electronic or mechanical access control solutions.
The position requires technical expertise in keying systems, lock repair and replacement, and the installation of door hardware in accordance with building codes and university standards. The Locksmith is expected to collaborate with Facilities staff, project teams, and campus stakeholders to ensure secure, reliable access to university spaces while maintaining a high standard of customer service and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
- Maintain, service, and troubleshoot a comprehensive range of locks across campus facilities, including but not limited to doors, windows, lockers, file cabinets, and padlocks.
- Design, install, retrofit, and upgrade locking hardware systems in both new and existing buildings to meet current security standards.
- Cut keys, repair locking mechanisms, and fabricate or modify parts as needed to ensure proper function and security.
- Install, maintain, and support mechanical and electronic locking systems, including cipher locks and audit trail hardware.
- Collaborate closely with the Department of Public Safety to manage key control procedures, access codes, and related security protocols.
- Manage the creation and distribution of vehicle keys in coordination with the fleet manager and mechanic, ensuring accurate inventory control.
- Install, maintain, and repair door closers and related hardware to ensure proper function and safety compliance.
- Monitor fire extinguisher locations and conditions, coordinating inspection and maintenance with approved vendors and Campus Public Safety.
- Maintain strict confidentiality when handling security codes, sensitive information, and personal data.
- Plan, organize, and execute assigned tasks independently or collaboratively, ensuring timely and effective completion of work orders.
- Operate and maintain tools and equipment safely; maintain a clean, organized, and secure workshop environment.
- Comply with all university safety standards and actively participate in required safety training sessions and certifications.
- Utilize and maintain the Key Management System (SIMPLE K), Microsoft Excel, and the Traka key management system for documentation and tracking.
- Maintain Medeco Biaxial certification and stay current on industry best practices and advancements.
- Perform additional duties related to campus security and facilities maintenance as assigned.
Scheduling
- Schedule and prioritize maintenance and installation tasks based on customer requests, space availability, and operational urgency.
- Coordinate work to minimize disruption to university activities, particularly in academic, administrative, and residential areas.
- Adjust schedules as needed to accommodate emergency requests or evolving campus needs, ensuring timely and efficient service delivery.
- Communicate clearly with university departments and stakeholders regarding project timelines, access requirements, and work impacts.
Administrative
- Accurately open, track, update, and close all assigned work orders using the university's facilities management system.
- Maintain timely and accurate documentation for work performed, including timesheets, equipment usage, materials consumed, and service reports.
- Ensure records are compliant with departmental policies and accessible for review and audit purposes.
- Attend departmental, facilities, and safety meetings as required to stay informed of policy updates, project schedules, and team coordination efforts.
Communication and Customer Service
- Serve as a key point of contact for all project-related communications, ensuring clarity and consistency across all channels including email, phone, text, and virtual meetings (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
- Clearly communicate with requesters regarding assessment processes, project scheduling, and status of ongoing work.
- Provide timely updates and progress reports to all stakeholders to ensure alignment and transparency.
- Collaborate closely with Facilities Managers to coordinate project scopes, share recommendations, and review estimates, ensuring that updates and work management reports are communicated effectively.
- Maintain a proactive and responsive communication approach to foster strong working relationships and ensure customer satisfaction.
Marginal Functions
- Maintain and service electronic and battery-operated access systems, including solenoid opening devices, ADA-compliant hardware, and the Medeco key system.
- Install and repair various types of door hardware and related security components as required to support campus operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of one (1) year of specialized or technical training in locksmithing or a closely related field.
- At least three (3) years of professional experience as a locksmith, including experience with lock repair, installation, and key systems in a comparable environment.
- Additional certifications or advanced training in access control systems, key management software, or electronic locking mechanisms.
- Prior experience working in an institutional, higher education, or campus environment with similar security and facilities management systems.

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate's gender or any other protected status.
