Associate Director of Residence Life

Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Residence Life, the Associate Director is responsible for supervision of four Assistant Directors, one Recruitment and Training Manager, human resource management, and strategic planning of the office. This position will serve in the Senior Administrator On Call Rotation - the fourth tier of the on-call structure at the University of Utah. Residence Life at the University of Utah is responsible for fostering belonging and student success for a 5,500-bed residential system, with aims to grow residential capacity to approximately 10,000 beds by 2030. The Associate Director will work collaboratively with the Residence Life leadership team, colleagues in the Office of the Dean of Student's, Housing & Dining Programs, Student Affairs and academic partners to enrich the student experience and create College Town Magic.'

Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities

Supervision
  • Hire, onboard, train, develop, and evaluate four Assistant Directors of Residence Life.
  • Hire, onboard, train, develop, and evaluate one Recruitment and Training Manager.
  • Create individualized development plans for all direct reports to further lifelong learning and skill development.
  • Develop working knowledge of University of Utah employee accountability process to hold staff accountable as needed and coach Assistant Director team in holding their coordinator teams accountable as needed.


Human Resource Management
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of key human resource processes for Residence Life - hiring, onboarding, training, development, evaluation, and offboarding for approximately 20 professional and 160 student staff.
  • Convene committees, as needed, to develop and implement key human resource processes to further Assistant Director and coordinator skill development.
  • Assess key outcomes and measures of all human resource processes, centering learning within all process evaluation.
  • Ensure compliance with all human resource processes, including but not limited to: timecard approvals, ongoing and required trainings, onboarding tasks, etc. for all Residence Life staff
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues within University of Utah Human Resource Management (UHRM) to manage and implement key human resource processes.
Student Belonging & Success
  • Provide ongoing support, in consultation with the Director, for Assistant Director team in refining student belonging and success initiatives within the residential experience model (REM).
  • Serve as a co-advisor, alongside a coordinator, Assistant Director, and Director, for the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) to further student self-governance. In consultation with the Assistant Director team, develop and assess a robust community council program that furthers student self-governance within the residential communities.
Leadership & Strategic Planning
  • Represent Residence Life on key divisional and university committees as needed, including but not limited to: Demonstration & Activity Resource Team, student accountability appeals committee, Behavioral Intervention Team, Threat Assessment, etc.
  • Assist the Director in the development of key metrics for Residence Life to further the storytelling abilities of the unit and showcase the unique ways Residence Life fosters student belonging and success at the University of Utah.
  • Provide leadership and strategic planning for four residential areas, in collaboration with Assistant Director team, to further key priorities around student belonging and success.
Budget Management
  • Oversee responsible stewardship of student fees in the management of budget lines totaling over three million dollars, including personnel costs.
  • Participate in annual budget planning process, alongside Residence Life leadership team, to ensure alignment with long-term planning and goal setting.
  • Work collaboratively with Housing & Dining Programs (HDP) and Student Affairs budget and finance teams to successfully monitor and track spending across multiple budget lines.
  • Work alongside the Assistant Director over RHA and NRHH to develop a comprehensive budget process for student engagement fee allocation.
Student Support & Accountability
  • Serve in the Senior Administrator On-Call rotation, the fourth tier of the on-call system.
  • As needed, serve as a hearing officer within the Dean of Student's.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director of Student Support for On Campus Students, work on elevated support cases and ensure proper follow-up and case management from Residence Life Staff
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Accountability for On Campus Students, work on elevated accountability cases and ensure proper follow-up and case management from Residence Life Staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business or Public Administration, a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Master's degree in Business Administration or related area preferred.

Preferences
  • Three to five years progressive experience in college or university campus housing supervising mid-level residence life professionals
  • Experience working with academic and co-curricular partners to enrich the residential experience through living learning programs, themed communities, or other program
  • Demonstrated commitment to building and sustaining collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Demonstrated skillset in assessment and storytelling
  • Mid-level on-call experience at a college or university housing and residence life setting
  • Demonstrated skillset in managing human resource management functions, including but not limited to: recruitment, onboarding, training, and offboarding.
