Job Summary

The Research Financial Services department invites applications for a Compliance and Revenue Management Accountant! Located in the Campus Controller's Office (CCO), Research Financial Services is responsible for the fiscal management of grants and contracts in accordance with government regulations, sponsor requirements, and University of Colorado System and CU Boulder policies. This team analyzes and processes financial data within the PeopleSoft system, and is responsible for drawing funds from letter of credit agencies, issuing invoices to sponsors, accounts receivable management and cash collections. Reporting and cash management for sponsored awards represents approximately $600 million annually. The Revenue Management Team functions are an essential ingredient to the successful management of each award, and many requires collaboration with department and central office staff. Cash management processes differ depending upon the originating sponsor and include federal letter of credit mechanisms, direct payments and invoicing. The Compliance unit involves financial audits for sponsored research, monitoring effort on sponsored projects, and accounting for cost share.This position works closely with the Department Research Administrators, the Office of Contracts and Grants (OCG), CCO staff, and Principal Investigators in the management of sponsored projects. This position works in partnership with the other Revenue Management Accountants and the Compliance Manager to complete all the tasks.This work position exists to:
  • Assure proper allocation of sponsored project payments at the University of Colorado Boulder
  • Process deposits received in CU's lockbox, via automated clearing house (ACH), wire transfers, inter-campus transfers, and refunds from CU
  • Respond to emails and other inquiries related to sponsored projects
  • Assist in completion of compliance tasks and other duties as needed
  • Provide consulting, training, and mentoring to campus personnel related to processes and procedures
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives, recommend changes to policies and procedures for the Boulder campus
  • Independently collaborate with campus partners to obtain invoices, source documents, and reference information to allocate funds

Who We Are

The Campus Controller's Office maintains and supports the university's fiscal responsibility through accurate financial accounting and reporting and in compliance with laws, regulations, policies/procedures and contract requirements for sponsored projects. We provide oversight, assistance and training in financial stewardship for the campus.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Process Excellence (identifying, improving, maintaining processes, including metrics)
  • Review grant and contract agreements to identify payment, reporting, and other financial terms and interpret sponsored project agreements and use sound judgment in determining payment application, financial reporting, and other terms/requirements of individual sponsors.
  • Create and reconcile deposits for allocation to appropriate awards/projects in PeopleSoft.
  • Review the sponsored projects clearing account for transfers that need deposits.
  • Perform accounts receivable maintenance tasks in PeopleSoft to close invoices upon request from Grant Accounting Team.
  • Journal entries for student financial aid activities.
  • Provide training and technical support for sponsor billing, payment and collection issues.
  • Assist as needed with electronic and new vendor forms, posting refunds from sponsored projects, and cash moves.
  • Assist the Compliance and Financial Reporting Manager in preparation of management-level reports. including checks and wires, lockbox activities, LOC activity, and additional ad hoc reports as needed.
  • Review job aids for updates annually and create new job aids for undocumented processes.
  • Assist with Compliance tasks such as cost share milestones, cost share setups, equipment reporting, closeouts, and more as needed.
University Satisfaction (provide customer service to campus staff and sponsors)
  • Work with CCO staff, campus research administrators and Principal Investigators from across the University to resolve outstanding payment and compliance issues.
  • Understand the award lifecycle and how sponsored project payments fit in the process.
  • Interpret award requirements and correspond with departments to ensure fulfillment.
  • Respond to emails from CCO staff, sponsors, and departments.
People Development (developing, retaining, recognizing our staff)
  • Seek opportunities for professional development and training for self/unit.
  • Cross trains with other Revenue Management Accountants, Cost Share Accountant, and Effort Management Accountant positions for back up when needed.
Infrastructure Enhancement (tech requirements, system upgrades & brand identity)
  • Gain a full understanding of the underlying systems supporting CCO and project accounting. Provide input on ongoing enhancements and improvements as requested.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Professional level accounting or finance work experience may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • One year of professional accounting or finance experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Outlook.

In addition, the RMA will have a strong command of systems and will use them to enable accurate reporting and ensure data integrity. Organizational, critical thinking and decision-making skills are highly recommended.
