Job Duties:
Bucknell University is seeking a Controls Tech I/II to join our Facilities Team! This position is responsible for the repair, maintenance and operational management of the instrumentation and control systems for the Co-Generation and Central Chiller Plants. Additionally, this position occasionally assists the Utilities Shop with troubleshooting and repairing building BAS/HVAC systems and equipment across campus.

WORK SETTING: On-campus (indoor & outdoor work required)
WORK SCHEDULE:
- This is normally a first shift, weekday position, but may require occasional weekend and shift work.
- This position is classified as part of essential services. The successful candidate is required to report to work even if campus has a delayed opening, early closing, or is closed, unless instructed otherwise by supervisor, or when the individual has concerns related to their personal safety.
- Ability to respond to call in's as required to address campus emergency issues.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Control Systems: Maintain and update PLC and BACnet control systems for boilers, burners, steam turbines, and chillers. This includes editing control software, operator interfaces, reports, and upgrading hardware like computers and drives.
Equipment Maintenance: Calibrate and maintain control devices like transmitters and valve positioners. Repair or replace electrical components and install new equipment as needed.
Technical Support: Support Co-Generation and Central Chiller Plant operations by advising operators, managing plant outages and repairs, and ordering parts.
Troubleshooting: Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with campus utility systems, including building automation (BAS) and HVAC systems.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING:
REQUIRED:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent
Experience:
Controls Tech I
- Four years of experience in commercial or institutional settings working with instrumentation and control systems. This includes PLCs, Windows-based control software, and devices like transmitters, flow meters, and switches; OR, a two-year technical degree focused on PLCs and control systems plus two years of relevant commercial or institutional experience.
Controls Tech II
- Six years of experience in commercial or institutional settings working with instrumentation and control systems. This includes PLCs, Windows-based control software, and devices like transmitters, flow meters, and switches; OR, a two-year technical degree focused on PLCs and control systems plus four years of relevant commercial or institutional experience.
- Working knowledge of power plant and chiller operations and associated controls.
- Working knowledge of electrical, oil, gas, steam, and condensate systems and associated equipment including boilers, turbines, generators pumps, valves, motors, compressors, chillers, cooling towers and other HVAC systems.
- Familiarity with standard industry safety procedures.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications to determine layout for electrical/mechanical systems.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.
- A valid driver's license and the ability to drive University vehicles.
- Other requirements: Successful completion of required background screens, including a motor vehicle check, and reference checks.
PREFERRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED:
Education: Two year technical degree from a qualified technical or trade school with emphasis in PLCs and control systems.
Experience: Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds without assistance.
- Ability to navigate the work site including climbing ladders, stairs and scaffolds and entering confined areas and crawl spaces.
- Must follow all safety procedures, including those related to trenching, lockout/tagout, and confined space entry.
- Regularly handling chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and lubricants that require proper safety practices for use, storage, and disposal.
- Work takes place both indoors and outdoors, with regular exposure to dust, dirt, weather conditions, and temperature changes.
Controls Tech I: $22.70 - $28.38
Controls Tech II: $26.12 - $32.64

The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
