About the Department:

Since 1973, SMU-in-Taos, also known as Fort Burgwin has been an educational center of Southern Methodist University. It's beautiful setting in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico--surrounded by the Carson National Forest --provides a unique backdrop for enriched educational experiences. The SMU-in-Taos department is charged with the operation of four SMU terms that take place on the Taos campus: Jan Term, May Term, June Term, and August Term. The department also provides conference and event coordination for outside groups to meet and experience engaging learning activities. SMU-in-Taos staff regularly engage students to connect them to courses offered in New Mexico. They also liaise with partners across campus, including Student Affairs, Enrollment Services, Advising, Development and External Affairs, and Risk Management.

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The Coordinator supports the SMU-in-Taos office, assisting with course scheduling, student recruiting, social media, website maintenance, and communication with students, faculty, and staff, and event and meeting coordination. The position is a key contact for students interested in studying on the Taos campus and their parents. It is the first point of contact for individuals who visit, call, or email the Taos office. The role liaises with vendors and prepares contracts and invoices for visitors. The Coordinator periodically travels out to Taos to prepare the campus for visitors. This role reports to the Director of Intersessional Programming in the Provost's Office.

Essential Functions:

  • Serves as communications liaison for SMU-in-Taos: answers phone inquiries, responds to program email, and maintains the office calendar. Develops and maintains effective relationships with students, faculty, and advisors, and other campus partners. Handles routine student questions related to application, advising, or the student experience of study in Taos.

  • Supports SMU-in-Taos marketing efforts. Works with social media platforms, website, email lists, etc. Plans and executes student-facing events on campus. Supports creative print marketing, including acquisition and design of promotional items. Engages students to promote opportunities to study in Taos in winter and summer sessions. Presents to various audiences about SMU-in-Taos.

  • Supports application and enrollment management. Maintains program databases. Prepares Taos course information for distribution on websites & other platforms. Helps maintain schedule of Taos classes. Handles routine student issues including student petitions and cancellation forms, scheduling, or advising issues. Helps faculty with questions related to their classes and stay in Taos.

  • Manages accounts with vendors and handles other departmental purchasing. Helps plan curricular activities, term logistics and other campus needs. Manages work study students and graduate assistants as required. Coordinates special projects and performs other duties as assigned. Collaborates on occasional cross-over projects with SMU-in-Taos' sister program, SMU Intersessions.

  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required to participate in events that engage students or while preparing for the start of term.

  • Occasional travel to the SMU-in-Taos campus is an expectation of the role, along with some travel for conferences and professional development.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree is preferred.

A minimum of two (2) years of experience is required, preferably with work experience in higher education. Experience working with diverse populations preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills and a strong customer service orientation.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Candidate ability to interact with students in an engaging manner is essential.

Candidate knowledge of academic advising and student affairs is strongly preferred.

Candidate knowledge of SMU curriculum and programs a plus.

Candidate proficiency using MS Office (especially MS Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is required.

Candidate knowledge of web content maintenance, graphic design, social media, and/or video editing platforms is desirable.

Candidate familiarity with Peoplesoft (my.SMU), Slate, Microsoft Teams, Qualtrics and/or Sharepoint is a plus. Must have the ability to learn new software.
