Job Summary
In 2020 the Ford School will be undergoing an upgrade and new theme of our content management system. The Ford School is seeking a creative, energetic team member to manage and work on our website, as well as several research center sites, during the website redesign project. This is a temporary position that we expect to need for approximately eight months to one year, depending on the progress of the website redesign project. The communication and outreach team advances the Ford School's visibility and reputation with prospective students, alumni, academic and policy professionals, peer institutions, and other audiences. The temporary Web Designer will support that mission by providing creativity, design, development, implementation, maintenance, and content management for the Ford School's website while maintaining site compliance with U-M policies, branding standards, accessibility, and copyrights.

Responsibilities*
In coordination with the Assistant director, Digital Strategy, the Web Designer Associate will design, build, and update web pages and the Ford School content management system using a variety of HTML and graphics software applications, techniques, and tools. In charge of the daily updates to the website including coordinating assignments to students.
  • Day-to-day web updates and development of Ford School Drupal and Wordpress installations
  • Assign tasks and supervise student assistants in coordination with Web Designer/Admin Senior
  • Event video streaming management and post-event processing and reporting
  • Web analytics reporting
  • Create, edit and send HTML emails
  • Site backups and maintenance
  • Follow best coding practices for application security, search engine optimization, and accessibility
  • Work on site redesign tasks including database and styling work to prepare for the upgrade of new content

    Required Qualifications*
    Bachelor degree in web design/development, or degree in a related technical field and at least one year of professional experience developing, managing and updating web content, or the combination of professional experience and education that allows someone to perform all aspects of this position.
  • Experience installing, developing and updating and theming complex multi-site Drupal and Wordpress sites
  • Development experience in web-based languages, or equivalent experience
  • Experience designing, developing, deploying and maintaining corporate or higher education websites
  • Working knowledge of and experience with web-based programming languages, tools, and technologies, including PHP 5, MySQL, Apache, Perl, JavaScript, XML, Unix, HTML, CSS, and Google Analytics
  • Experience conducting usability testing of web sites
  • Excellent written and verbal English language communication skills
  • Excellent collaboration skills
  • Experience with Drupal and/or Wordpress sites.
  • Experience with design software such as Adobe InDesign, Fireworks, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop

    Desired Qualifications*
  • Ability to ensure web accessibility using ARIA landmarks and validating HTML/CSS
  • Knowledge and experience installing, developing and updating and theming complex multi-site Drupal and Wordpress sites
  • Familiarity with University of Michigan ITS web hosting and structure
  • Experience with Google Analytics, web analytic reporting, and data visualization tools, web streaming experience.
