Pasadena City College is hiring a Full-time, tenure-track Counselor commencing with the 2023-2024 academic year.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE TRANSFER/HONORS COUNSELOR:

  • Provide academic, career and personal counseling to a diverse student population in the General Transfer and Honors Services area; serve as counselor lead transfer and honors workshops, orientations and application labs, present student success workshops, provide educational planning services for new and continuing students, conduct transcript evaluations for students with credits from other institutions, provide interventions for probationary and disqualified students.
  • As the transfer and Honors program counselor, the incumbent also will be responsible for the recruitment, retention, and transfer of low income, first generation Latinx and Black African American students
  • Support department and campus-wide transfer initiatives and programing
  • Counseling faculty are expected to participate in professional development opportunities offered by the college those that facilitate growth in institutional practices that foster successful outcomes for African American, Latinx, LGBTQ, and undocumented students.
  • Participate in professional development activities that support best practices for teaching a diverse population of both major and non-major students
  • Participate in the evaluation, revision, and development of the curriculum
  • Participate with faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes. Use the results to improve teaching and learning
  • Undertake the divisional and professional responsibilities of a regular faculty member
  • Participate in divisional and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of students with differing learning modalities and abilities
  • Knowledge of current practices in distance education including learning management systems such as Canvas
  • Experience with Student Learning Outcomes and assessment methods
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other members of the campus community
  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic environment with students of varying academic preparation and learning styles
  • Knowledgeable about culturally sustaining pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging African American, Latinx, and Indigenous groups who are historically underrepresented and underserved
  • Recent experience working with minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shapes patterns of participation and outcomes
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience and proficiency in current teaching and learning techniques



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling
OR
  • the equivalent

(NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of five years community college counseling experience, including knowledge and experience in working with articulation policies and transfer agreements for four-year institutions, is highly desirable.
  • Evidence of sensitivity to issues of diversity, and ability to motivate and counsel community college students of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders, cultures, and learning styles, as well as students with disabilities or varied levels of academic preparation.
  • Recent experience counseling African American, Latina/o/x, Native American, and other underserved students in an academic setting; and a willingness to use culturally responsive counseling practices.
  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of counseling practices or experiences that lead to successful outcomes for African American and Latina/o/x students that will contribute to closing the equity gap for these students.
  • In addition to demonstrated experience in handling complex transfer matters and understanding of practices that lead to successful outcomes for our African American and Latina/o/x students, the Transfer and Honors Department also looks for a candidate who shows a willingness to engage in analysis of how to re-imagine practices that can positively affect these populations of students.
  • The candidate should also have experience with successful practices for students with physical and/or learning disabilities as these factors relate to differences in learning styles

THE ASSIGNMENT:
  • Twelve Months, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning July 2023.
  • Thirty-five (35) hours per week, plus five (5) hours for professional growth and development activities, college governance, and other professional responsibilities.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Successful completion of Live Scan clearance and TB screening
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109
  • Meeting applicable eligibility requirements under CalPERS or CalSTRS if you are a current or former member
  • Board of Trustees approval
