Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at California State University, Fullerton, seeks an energetic, enthusiastic, and well-organized faculty member who desires a career that balances excellent teaching with outstanding scholarship and professional service. Candidates may apply for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2018. CSUF values and is dedicated to the goal of building a diverse community. Position
The new faculty member will 1) teach courses in the Undergraduate and Graduate TESOL Programs, 2) advise students and perform other program duties, 3) play a major role in the coordination of the undergraduate TESOL program, 4) serve as a liaison with the College of Education for the assessment of the TESOL Programs, and 5) serve on academic committees and contribute to department and university governance. The normal teaching load is four three-unit courses (12 units) or the equivalent per semester, but course loads may be reduced for such activities as research, course development, and departmental responsibilities. Positive decisions on tenure and promotion require excellent teaching as well as research, peer-reviewed publication, and contributions to the University and the profession.

Qualifications
Required

  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or related field. (Advanced ABDs may be considered; degree must be completed by date of appointment.)
  • Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience at the college or university level.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in English.
  • Intermediate to native proficiency in a language other than English.
  • Ability to teach second language acquisition (SLA), ESL/EFL methodology, and developmental and advanced ESL composition.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in student-centered teaching.
  • Strong and clear research agenda.
  • Evidence of the ability to work collegially with others.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse student, faculty, and staff populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

Rank and Salary
The position is at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure-track. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salary is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases. Summer research grants, moving expenses, start-up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
