Provide professional level support services to ensure the full functionality, effective operation, and maintenance of the District's computer systems, hardware and software, and related infrastructure; and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the advanced level class in the Systems Administrator series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the CalPass Systems Administrator by the level of responsibility assumed, complexity of duties assigned and by the scope and impact on District computer operations. This classification has a wide scope and great impact on the operation of District computer systems. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives limited supervision from an assigned supervisor. May exercise technical oversight over lower level technical staff.
  1. Administer, design, and triage District computer servers including but not limited to monitoring and managing system performance, tuning for optimal system speed, reliability, and performance; ensure system security and disaster response and recovery.
  2. Research, troubleshoot, and resolve complex and ambiguous issues often involving a combination of hardware, operating system, and internally developed or vendor software applications.
  3. Administer or participate in administering mass storage data systems; participate in planning architecture and allocating storage capacity.
  4. Design and develop new methodologies, standards, frameworks, and tools, capturing user requirements; train other technology staff on the uses of new technology.
  5. Oversee, design and monitor District computer backup and recovery processes.
  6. Provide technical assistance to evaluate potential software applications; advise regarding connectivity, system requirements, integration, and supportability.
  7. Administer, monitor and design the District virtual infrastructure solution.
  8. Oversee, maintain, and design the student and employee email systems to ensure high availability and responsiveness for all users.
  9. Analyze and assess the technological needs and challenges of the District computer systems; advise management regarding future system threats and challenges, security issues, necessary system upgrades and replacements, and continuing to leverage current resources.
  10. Document the functionality and requirements of information systems; create user guides and manuals for system users; assist to train users as needed.
  11. Serve as a technical resource for lower level staff.
  12. Maintain up-to-date technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications and establishing personal networks in professional organizations.
  13. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Knowledge of:
  • Principles, practices and methods of systems administration and maintenance, including configuration, performance tuning, and diagnostic tools.
  • Operating system architectures, characteristics, and components of information systems and operating systems (Linux and Windows).
  • Computer programming in several languages.
  • Principles of network design and integration including topologies and protocols.
  • Data storage technology principles, practices, hardware, components, and software.
  • Principles and practices of disaster recovery.
  • Systems integration design concepts and practices.
  • Systems security and capacity planning principles, methods, and practices.
Ability to:
  • Anticipate system and network problems, develop and implement a plan of action.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and tuning to resolve complex systems management issues
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Exercise independent judgment while maintaining District standards and guidelines.
  • Prepare clear and concise technical documents and reports.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Stay abreast of changing technology.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.
  • Sit for prolonged periods of time; extensive use of a computer keyboard; may be required to lift up to 30 pounds.
Education and Experience Requirements Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, information systems or a related field. Experience: Three (3) years of related systems networking, programming or administration experience with at least one year of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: This position works on a 10 month calendar, from August to May. The job assignment is in the South Campus, Mountain House.
