DEFINITION

To consult with potential and existing small business owners and provide assistance in business operations; to provide information and coordinate start-up or expansion processes of small businesses; and to perform a variety of professional tasks in support of assigned area of responsibility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from the Director of Small Business Development Center.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Consult with potential and existing small business owners; assess and analyze business needs; assist in researching, planning and problem solving for starting or maintaining a small business; assist in developing marketing plans.
  1. Present various workshops and seminars on business topics including financing, legal requirements, marketing and other related issues.
  1. Help small businesses be compliant with applicable city, county, state and federal ordinances and regulations.
  1. Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing small business expansion services; implement policies and procedures.
  1. Develop and administer marketing plans for the Small Business Development Center (SBDC); promote SBDC activities through online, networking and other publicity methods.
  1. Maintain client statistical information including business creation, status and outcome; follow-up with clients to ascertain future needs.
  1. Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness; prepare statistical reports as required.
  1. Develop survey instruments; conduct surveys of program participants to determine participant needs; interpret and record survey results; implement program changes in response to results.


  1. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Knowledge of:
  • Basic operations, services and activities of a small business assistance program.
  • Methods and procedures used in starting or expanding a small business.
  • Principles and practices of business, management, marketing and financing.
  • Principles and practices of program development and implementation.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping and basic report preparation.
  • Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers.

Ability to:
  • Coordinate and help direct small business assistance programs.
  • Recommend and implement goals and objectives for providing small business assistance services.
  • Provide guidance, technical assistance and direction to small businesses.
  • Create, analyze and modify small business plans to meet client needs.
  • Help small businesses comply with applicable laws, codes and regulations.
  • Provide applicable and helpful information regarding business operations.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the general public.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.

Experience and Experience Requirements:

Education:

Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration, public administration or a related field.

Experience:

Three years of increasingly responsible small business management experience including one year of administrative responsibility.

Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time.
