Job Summary
The Department of Cell & Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan Medical School is dedicated to the instruction and guidance of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, as well as post-baccalaureate and post-doctoral trainees in the areas of cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, neuroscience, organogenesis, stem cell biology, and tissue repair and regeneration.

The Department of Cell & Developmental Biology is seeking a highly motivated and professional individual to lead our pre-award research administration. This position will support the continued expansion of the department's highly productive research program by providing senior research administration services to faculty and trainees in the department. The ideal candidate will combine a strong background in research administration with interest in collaborative process improvement and further career development. This position offers the opportunity of fully independent authority over a majority of the department's pre-award research portfolio. This position is deadline driven and may require overtime periodically.

Responsibilities*
  • Partner with faculty and trainees in the development, preparation, and successful submission of grant and contract proposals to a variety of sponsors including the NIH, DoD, foundations, societies, and industry sponsors
  • Work with the development office to find funding opportunities in line with current research initiatives
  • Coordinate training opportunities for faculty and trainees for grant writing and budget preparation
  • Assist faculty members with submission and signature of all Unfunded Agreements
  • Prepare budgets of varying complexity for proposals, contracts, and other agreements
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff in management and updating of Other Support and biosketch documents
  • Assist faculty with submission of progress reports and administrative supplements
  • Coordinate with collaborating institutions, departments, and internal reviewers to ensure timely submission of proposals to sponsors
  • Prepare information to fulfill Just-In-Time requests
  • Participate in university- and department-wide research administration workgroups and meetings
  • Department liaison for the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects and the Medical School Grants Office and inform department members of important information and changes
  • Process payments that the department receives in the form of cash or checks

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in science, finance, business administration, or related field
  • Exceptional organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in independent management of deadline-oriented projects
  • Software proficiency, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
  • Strong skills in both team-based collaboration and individual work
  • Senior Level: Five or more years experience in research administration
  • Intermediate Level: Three or more years experience in research administration

Desired Qualifications*
  • Working knowledge of eResearch, M-Pathways, and other internal UM platforms
  • Direct research administration experience, especially NIH proposals and awards
  • Familiarity with multiple sponsor funding guidelines and UM policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting faculty with research portfolios
  • Familiarity with large NIH award mechanisms (P30, T32, P01, U54, etc)
  • Experience with grant writing largely preferred
