Job Summary
The Bentley Historical Library invites applications for the Project Archivists Program, a hiring initiative launched in 2015. This program matches early career archivists with term-limited positions aligned with the library's key initiatives. Multiple two-year positions are available for Project Archivists, with continuation the second year contingent upon satisfactory performance within the first six months of employment. Start of employment in June 2020 is preferred.

Archivists at the Bentley Historical Library are committed to pursuing best practices and innovative ideas in collecting, curating, and promoting both academic research and public interest in the records of the University of Michigan and major collections relating to the history of the state of Michigan, its peoples, and organizations. Positions available are within the following teams: Curation; Reference and Academic Programs; and University History.

Examples of key initiatives for Curation are:
  • Applying best practices to archival processing, description, and management of collections in diverse formats
  • Curating large and complex born-digital and digitized collections
  • Reviewing and clearing rights for digitized audiovisual material
  • Researching and applying innovative uses of Aeon, Archive-It, ArchivesSpace, Archivematica, ArcLight, and DSpace

Examples of key initiatives for Reference and Academic Programs are:
  • Continuing to improve the research experience by providing innovative and collaborative consultation and instruction methods, excellent service, and an optimal research environment, which is accessible for all
  • Nurturing and developing close collaboration and strong partnerships between University of Michigan faculty and the Bentley regarding innovative ways for students to learn and interact with primary sources during class sessions and beyond

Examples of key initiatives for University History are:
  • Maximize the Bentley's resources, visibility, and reputation as the source for the history of The University of Michigan
  • Conducting research to further ongoing projects relating to the history of diversity on campus
  • Expanding efforts to make university publications available as fully searchable publications
  • Continuing to respond promptly and accurately to requests from University administration

Required Qualifications*
  • Master's degree in archives and records management from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association or subject expertise through the attainment of an advanced degree relevant to archival administration
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting and to meet demanding project deadlines with project management skills
  • Practical understanding of archival standards and systems
  • Ability to routinely move 30-40 pound boxes and to occasionally ascend/descend ladders and/or stairs

Desired Qualifications*
  • Familiarity with challenges surrounding preserving and providing access to born-digital materials
  • Proven capacity to acquire new skills and to synthesize and act upon complex technical information and developments
