JOB SUMMARY

The Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) Department at the University of Connecticut, Storrs is seeking to fill a full-time 12-month Laboratory Technician 2 position beginning February 17, 2023. The successful candidate will provide technical support for high-enrollment MCB laboratory courses on the Storrs campus. This position is part of the Department's Teaching Laboratory Services unit which supports undergraduate laboratory courses. The expected work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7am to 3pm which includes one hour for lunch. The incumbent may be expected to work flexible hours.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepare and test moderately difficult laboratory experiments for the MCB undergraduate Biochemistry and Genetics laboratory courses to ensure students have all the resources to successfully complete the weekly laboratory experiments in a timely manner.
Identify and resolve problems with experimental methods and techniques, with occasional recourse to the supervisor.
Make modifications to standard experiments to incorporate new technology in the undergraduate biochemistry and genetics experiments as needed.
Establish preparation manuals for the undergraduate laboratory courses including standard operating procedures, experimental checklist, and safety documentation.
Participate in meetings to plan and evaluate lab experiments for the MCB undergraduate laboratory courses; assists in evaluating procedures for intended results and make modifications to incorporate suggestions for improvement.
Assist with the editing and updating of laboratory manuals for the biochemistry and genetics laboratory courses, and keep current on new procedures.
Prepare solutions, bacterial media, stains, enzymes, reagents, and other lab supplies or apparatus needed to implement the weekly laboratory exercises; maintain bacterial cultures and stocks; maintain and collect fruit flies for the genetics laboratory course.
On a yearly basis, prepare an accurate inventory of chemicals, bacterial cultures, supplies, and equipment.
Set up and maintain equipment for laboratory classrooms including the inspection and cleaning of equipment after student usage.
As needed assist with other duties such as cleaning laboratory classrooms, cleaning glassware, decontaminating waste, and the preparation of reagents and supplies for all MCB laboratory courses.
Assist with the enforcement of laboratory safety procedures.
Work assigned schedule which could vary by semester.
Perform related tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in molecular and cell biology or a related field and three years of experience, or equivalent education and experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of concepts, practices, safety protocols, and standard laboratory procedures with an emphasis on biochemistry lab techniques and basic knowledge of genetics lab techniques.
Demonstrated ability to clearly explain laboratory procedures and offer technical advice and guidance as needed.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, time-management, and communication skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in biochemistry, genetics, or a related field.
One year of laboratory experience in a high-volume academic setting.
Experience with purchasing supplies for high-volume courses.
Experience working with Drosophilia.
Experience writing and communicating laboratory protocols.
Ability to engage, connect and work with diverse student, administrative, and faculty populations and provide a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an educational setting.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a 12-month, full-time position. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
