General Purpose
Under general supervision, provides a variety of assistance to faculty and students in an assigned academic department, lab or center; schedules appointments, coordinates with instructors and arranges for and proctors tests, following established procedures applicable to individual students; scores tests and enters data in student records; maintains a clean, safe and orderly laboratory and learning environment; and performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
  • Assists instructors in assembling and preparing materials and handouts for classroom use; readies media equipment, software applications and distance learning equipment for classroom use; ensures equipment is in sound working order or arranges for repairs by Information Technology staff.
  • Schedules students by telephone or in person for testing appointments, following guidelines and procedures; schedules use of rooms to meet individual student accommodation requirements; coordinates with instructors to obtain tests to be administered; accesses the DSP&S student database to identify accommodations approved for individual students; reserves specialized equipment, arranges for readers or writers or makes other accommodation provisions.
  • Proctors tests and monitors students during testing to ensure integrity of the testing process; provides calm and reassurance to minimize students' testing anxiety utilizing established approaches; prepares incident reports in the event a student fails to follow testing procedures; scores tests using computer tools or Scantron equipment; records test results and forwards results and testing materials to instructors.
  • Provides input in selecting and trains student aides; schedules and monitors the work of aides; reviews student aide timesheets.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of historically minoritized groups and participates in professional development activities to increase cultural competency to enhance equity-minded practices within the District.

    OTHER DUTIES
  • Provides backup for other college administrative staff; assists students by answering questions about the application process, orientation and other matters.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
    Knowledge of:
  • Office practices and procedures including recordkeeping.
  • Uses and operations of office equipment including computers and copiers.
  • Basic math.
  • Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of specific instructional area to which assigned, including, as applicable, a general knowledge of accommodations and associated equipment approved for DSP&S students and distance learning classroom processes.
    Skills and Abilities to:
  • Provide effective guidance to students in applicable area of assignment; accurately, thoroughly and clearly answer students' subject-matter and technology questions.
  • Provide day-to-day administrative and technical support to instructors in carrying out their responsibilities.
  • Organize, set priorities and exercise sound judgment within areas of responsibility.
  • Walk students through uses and operations of specialized equipment and software.
  • Analyze, interpret, explain and apply relevant procedures and guidelines applicable to the work.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of department and student records and information.
  • Use tact, discretion, courtesy, empathy and patience in dealing with sensitive and difficult students and situations.
  • Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Operate a computer and standard business software.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those encountered in the course of work.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and at least one year of responsible experience providing instructional or tutorial assistance to students; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program.

    APPLICATION REVIEW AND ASSESSMENTS
    The application review process includes an evaluation of training and experience based on given application information and answers to supplemental questionnaire. Only the most qualified applicants, who pass the minimum qualifications review, will be invited to the assessment process.

    The assessment process will include an online competency assessment (100% weight). Passing score is 75% out of 100%.

    ELIGIBILITYLIST
    Candidates who attain a passing score on each part of the assessment will be placed in rank order on a district wide Open-Competitive List. Using the same process, a separate Promotional List will be established and both Lists will be used concurrently. Unless otherwise indicated, the eligibility list will be used to fill current vacancies in this classification districtwide for at least one year. The current vacancy is at Fresno City College.
