Job Description:
APPOINTMENT: September 1, 2018

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Illinois Small Business Development Center at Western Illinois University-Macomb (IL SBDC) provides confidential business counseling and training to help entrepreneurs start, grow, expand and sustain their businesses. These counseling services will be provided through one-on-one and where appropriate, group business consultation and advising. Under the direction of the Director of the IL SBDC at WIU--Macomb, this position provides technical business assistance, technical business advising, public outreach, advocacy and integration of business counseling services in a 10 county service area of West-Central Illinois. In this capacity, the consultant will support small business job creation by assisting entrepreneurs with business advising services that will drive local area job creation and retention.

The primary objective of the consultant will be to identify, support and help new and existing business to grow and develop. A primary result of consulting efforts is to assist in job creation and retention through additional capital additions, as well as, profitability improvements through increased sales and the control of costs. Assistance efforts will be focused on the acquisition of new capital for start-up as well as existing businesses. In addition, for existing business clients, efforts will be focused upon the increase of existing business sales and the reductions of operating costs.

RANK & SALARY: This is a full-time, 12-month, renewable position contingent upon funds and performance. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: An earned bachelor's degree (i.e. B.A., B.B., or B.S.) in business, accounting, economics or related field, AND/OR previous significant experience in business ownership and small business experience. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Basic understanding of financial statements. Self-motivated, with ability to work independently using affective organizational skills to manage a complex workload. Willingness to adapt to a flexible work schedule: extensive travel within the service area and throughout the state, early morning or evening meetings and training events, and multi-day conferences. Computer literacy with working knowledge of Internet, email, word processing, spreadsheet and database packages. Ability to cold call prospective SBDC partners.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Competency to obtain and retain the Certified Business Specialist designation as defined by the Illinois Entrepreneurship and Small Business Growth Association, (IESBGA). Awareness of the external environment in the IL SBDC-Macomb 10 county service area: including economic climate, business and industry trends, banking community and governmental/legal/regulatory framework at the city, county, state, and federal levels.

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body).

Macomb is an Amtrak city with twice-daily service to Chicago. Macomb is located approximately 75 miles from the Quad Cities International Airport (Moline, IL) and 70miles from the Greater Peoria Regional Airport (Peoria, IL).

WIU-Quad Cities (Student Population: 1,332): The only public university in the Quad Cities area, WIU-QC offers select undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies, at its metropolitan, non-residential campus in Moline, IL (population 44,000). The Quad Cities (population 376,000) rests on the banks of the Mississippi River and is comprised of Moline and Rock Island in western Illinois and Davenport and Bettendorf in eastern Iowa. Moline, Illinois is home to the Quad Cities International Airport.
