Position Summary

This is a Part Time hourly position working about 16 hours per week.

The majority of work will take place on the South Seattle College main campus with the opportunity to work at target secondary school sites as needed. The TRIO Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search programs assist Middle and High School participants with retention, college admissions applications, enrollment forms, FAFSA applications, career planning, and program selection. TRIO UBETS provides these services to students 11-21 years-of-age, who are low-income and will be first generation college students.

Tutors will help manage student flow and resource access in our busy office. Our main office is a popular student space for Running Start students from local target school sites and we help to bridge them to college. South Seattle College is one of the most diverse community colleges in Washington State.

Hourly and Student Benefit Eligibility Rules At-a-Glance:
There are three (3) types of employee benefits temporary hourly (and some student) employees may qualify for:

  1. The 480 Hour Rule - Health Insurance
    1. Tracked in rolling six (6) consecutive month blocks of time
    2. Current department charge is $939 per month even if the employee waives medical coverage
      1. This rate usually changes July 1st each year; usually increasing annually
      2. Students are not tracked for this rule
  2. The 70 Hour Rule - Retirement plan participation in a Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) Plan:
    1. Tracked for an academic year (September through August)
    2. Current department charge is a dollar amount equal to 12.86% of the employee's gross earnings
      1. This rate changes periodically throughout the year as determined by DRS. Rate changes can be found on the document titled "Estimated Employer Paid Benefit Cost Analysis" posted on the Document Center of our Intranet.
      2. Students are tracked for this rule
  3. The 350 Hour Role - WFSE Union Membership
    1. Tracked from anniversary date to anniversary date
    2. There is not a departmental charge incurred
    3. Students are not tracked for this rule

Tips:
  • No temporary employee should work more than a total of 16 hours per week. Since the employee may be working in multiple departments, the supervisor will need to make sure they are coordinating with the other departments to be sure the employee does not exceed 16 hours each week. This ensures the employee will not hit the 70 or 480 Hour Rules.
  • Please make a habit of checking the weekly totals on each TLR timecard the supervisor approves to ensure no week exceeds 16 hours. A supervisor will not be able to see timecards for other departments, so please be sure to work with other supervisors to track hours in other areas.
  • Working 17 hours per week does not ensure the employee will remain under 70 hours per month as some months have a longer second half than others.
  • The 350 Hour Rule is unavoidable. Please be aware hourly employees will eventually become eligible for WFSE Union Membership.
