Job Summary
We are looking for a personable, self-starter, detail-oriented team player to deliver M-Health interventions in person or remotely by phone or video platform. Our federally funded research project focuses on youth substance misuse and high risk fire arm behavior. The study takes place at the Hurley Medical Center Emergency Department in Flint, Michigan. Key job functions include delivering M-Health intervention sessions, which includes motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral training, and care management. The coach would also assist with smart phone app onboarding, contacting participants for overdue sessions, investigating care management needs between session, and maintaining study and clinical session records. Regular communication with study coordinator, recruiters of various projects, and study participants required. Participants will be aged 16-24 and seeking care at the Emergency Department (ED) at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI.

Coaches should be comfortable with administering therapy to an urban adolescent population, conducting video or telephone counseling, and addressing issues related to substance use and violence. Coaches will be required to undergo specialized training for the delivery of the intervention and will receive regular re-trainings in line with the study fidelity protocol. Coaches should also be proficient with Microsoft word, excel, and web-based systems.

Responsibilities*
  • Conduct brief clinical interventions using motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy with all eligible participants in an ED setting.
  • Onboard participants to the project's smart phone application.
  • Using a video platform or in person, the coach will conduct weekly M-Health intervention sessions using Motivational Interviewing, CBT, and case management.
  • Locate and schedule participant's weekly M-health sessions by phone, email, FB messenger, U.S .mail, and occasionally maybe called upon to travel to meet a participant at their home or an agreed upon public location for in-person session delivery.
  • Participating in research meetings and carrying out routine correspondence in regards to project activities.
  • Document accurately clinical encounters, adhere to all intervention procedures and communicate daily/weekly updates to study coordinator.

  • Other duties include: perform and document risk assessments, CPS reports, document shift events and tracking data; follow all recruitment and intervention procedures; complete daily paperwork accurately and in a timely manner. Adhere to all protocols and procedures.

  • Provide nightly/weekly shift summaries to the study coordinator and/or lead recruiter/health-coach.

  • Enter and clean data in ACCESS database.

    Required Qualifications*
    • Bachelor's degree required. Weekend/evening availability is required along with the ability to commute to Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI as the primary work location. Additionally, the ability to work independently, pay close attention to detail, follow through with tasks, work as part of a team, observe and maintain data confidentiality, and feel comfortable approaching strangers and comfortable in an ED setting is required. Strong computer skills (MS Office, data entry, etc.), technology skills, and basic research knowledge is necessary.

    Desired Qualifications*
    • Masters degree preferred as well as 0-1+ year experience in research and therapy delivery.
    • The candidate must be very detail-oriented with excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work well with others as well as approach strangers, and have strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Reliable transportation is necessary and candidates will be asked to cross train in other job duties (i.e.., recruit as well as conduct follow-up interviews).

    Work Schedule
    This position requires flexibility, availability to work up to five days a week, during day and night hours (anywhere from 12pm-2am), any day of the week (including weekend shifts). Also, this position requires ability to occasionally shift during midnight hours (12am to 8am).

    Work Locations
    This position is located in Flint, Michigan at Hurley Medical Center. Although the position is based in Flint, infrequent travel to Ann Arbor for supervision and training is expected.

    Additional Information
    Please note this is a minimum 50 % effort, with possibility of increased effort during the project, 1-year Part-time term-limited position. At the end of the stated term, the appointment may terminate and will not be eligible for Reduction in Force (RIF) benefits.

    Background Screening
