Job Description:


The Executive Director of University Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO) is responsible for defining overall strategies, ensuring security and creating and enforcing policies and procedures regarding information technology and cyber awareness for the University. The Executive Director/CIO further provides technical vision, planning, and implementation of improvements to ensure execution is in accordance with established and accepted best practices for academia and the university, as well as budgetary oversight and management oversight of direct reports, including customer service-focused technicians providing support to all departments within the University. Reporting directly to the Provost and Academic Vice President, the Executive Director/CIO also serves as the resident technology expert on all matters relevant to academic technology. The Executive Director/CIO demonstrates a commitment to leadership, innovation, diversity, and development by ensuring service excellence and student and employee success.

APPOINTMENT: The position of Executive Director of University Technology and Chief Information Officer at Western Illinois University will begin on July 1, 2022; or a mutually agreeable date to be determined.

Requirements:


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a computer science-related field required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a department head or senior supervisor in a similarly sized and structured, diverse company, including responsibility for fiscal oversight
  • Minimum of three (3) years of working knowledge and experience in the policy and regulatory environment of information security
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to use diplomacy, inclusion and consensus to inform the decision-making process, together with the ability to effectively articulate, both orally and in written form to effectively communicate complex concepts to university leadership and campus community.
  • Record of supervisory experience managing multiple, cross-functional teams and key stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in policy development, program administration and compliance/incidence response activities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technology related security issues across a complex organization

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Advanced degree in computer science, information technology or related field
  • Additional coursework and/or CISSP, CISM, GIAC certifications or equivalent certifications
  • Direct experience implementing and managing information security solutions in a university environment including student-centered systems and services to support the administrative and academic missions within a university setting.
  • A demonstrated commitment to and advocacy for diversity, equity, and inclusion within their IT organization, institution, and community.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressive responsible experience successfully managing a significant portfolio of technology and IT services in a complex multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Proven experience in policy development, program administration and compliance/incidence response activities.


For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body). Unless otherwise stated, the degree must be "in hand" at the time of application.

WIU-Macomb, IL (Student Population: 6,432): A traditional, residential four-year campus offering a comprehensive slate of undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education, WIU-Macomb is located in the heart of west central Illinois in Macomb (population 20,000). Amtrak provides twice-daily service from Macomb to Chicago (and point in-between). Macomb is located approximately 75 miles from the Quad Cities International Airport (Moline, IL) and 70 miles from the Greater Peoria Regional Airport (Peoria, IL).

WIU-Quad Cities (Student Population: 1,192): The only public university in the Quad Cities area, WIU-QC offers select undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies, at its metropolitan, non-residential campus in Moline, IL.
