We offer residential, executive and online degree programs. We are composed of six graduate departments, one undergraduate program, a unique joined degree with the School of Information (Health Informatics), and will be launching a new online MPH degree in Fall 2019.

This position will report to the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement and Practice in the Office for Student Engagement and Practice within the Dean's Office. The Director of Student Affairs occupies a key position within Michigan Public Health, working collaboratively with other units of the Dean's Office, academic leadership, faculty, staff and students to promote student recruitment and enrollment, enhance the quality of student learning, wellness, and engagement. The Director will provide supervision, direction and oversight for activities related to student services programs. These activities include recruitment, admissions, records and registration, career development, and student wellness and support services. We seek a proven leader with exceptional interpersonal, communication, and management skills with demonstrated excellence in the delivery of services needed for a diverse community of students.

Responsibilities*

Strategic Leadership

  • Establish and implement a comprehensive student affairs strategy with goals, practices, and policies that align with and support the mission, vision and strategy of Michigan Public Health.

  • Work with the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement and Practice and other members of the School's leadership team on strategic issues that impact student recruitment, admissions, academic and wellness services, and career development.

  • Support the School's mission, strategy, and commitment to diversity and inclusion, particularly those efforts related to the student experience.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of operating plans, objectives, and tactics so that:

    • The team has clearly defined goals, objectives, and measures aligned with school priorities

    • Programs and activities are regularly assessed to identify opportunities for improvement

    • Results are regularly presented to the Assistant Dean and leadership team


Student Affairs Management
  • Develop, manage and evaluate team (approximately 10-12 staff; 4-5 direct reports); establish and model performance expectations and standards to foster a positive, high-service, and innovative culture; provide leadership for the training and motivation of staff that enables them to realize their full potential and meet the school's goals; and advance the school's efforts to build a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community.

  • Serve as a primary resource for the school on admissions and academic policies. Assist with academic policy enforcement as needed.

  • Provide oversight for all aspects of the admissions process and record keeping.

  • Strategically develop and manage budgets for student affairs programs, services, and activities.

  • Ensure the integration of additional services needed by students in undergraduate and online programs into existing processes and practices.


Partnerships
  • Establish and sustain partnerships with other departments within the school and across campus to accomplish student affairs objectives including prospective student recruitment activities for residential, online, graduate and undergraduate students and strategic use of the customer relationship management system.

  • Represent Michigan Public Health on campus-wide committees and liaise with campus units around student affairs and admissions activities. Serve as lead contact for admissions and student services with the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health and the Schools of Public Health Application System.


Required Qualifications*
  • A master's degree and a minimum of five (5) years of management experience with at least three (3) years in the field of higher education/student services or equivalent combination of education and experience..

  • Evidence of and demonstrated success in creating an inclusive, service-oriented environment for a multicultural student body.

  • Proven ability to foster, work in, and appreciate an interdisciplinary and diverse community environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to formulate strategic plans, implement programs, and evaluate the success of these initiatives.

  • Demonstrated curiosity and ability to develop and pursue multiple strategic initiatives that foster student and administrative success in a manner that aligns with Michigan Public Health's mission and goals.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data for decision-making.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle crises effectively and to solve problems proactively and creatively.

  • Demonstrated success in interpersonal relations, collaboration, reasoning, and exercising sound judgment.

  • Strong ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent computer proficiency, data sense, detail orientation, and organizational skills.
