Position Description:

PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Vice President of University Advancement, the Director of Communications & Marketing acts independently to lead, create, manage, implement and evaluate the University's communications, public relations and marketing plans across all media platforms. The Director oversees efforts to gather information about CSUMB programs and experiences from stakeholders in all campus divisions, identifies and uses relevant market research in execution and evaluation of the strategy, and creates and monitors effectiveness of targeted messaging that is consistent with the University's brand and message for a variety of audiences.
The Director has responsibility for communications and marketing strategies that meet the needs of the University as a whole to raise the visibility, maintain recognition, distinguish the University's identity, positively and effectively position the institution and enhance the image of CSUMB to the campus community and external audiences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Leads and manages a creative team of publications, advertising, marketing, public and media relations professionals in the development and execution of a comprehensive, integrated communications and marketing program. This includes oversight of digital and web content development, publications, advertising, social media, public and media relations. Track workflow and adjust resources up or down as required.
  2. Works closely with campus administrators, faculty, staff, and students to provide strategic marketing and communications support to all areas of the university. Ensure messages are integrated across campus.
  3. Conducts and directs research necessary to craft sound message development.
  4. Manages the department's budget and staff, including hiring, training and development, evaluation and performance management, and workflow coordination (traffic).
  5. Provides leadership and messaging for internal communications across campus on current campus events and campus alerts/emergencies.
  6. Coordinates the university's response and messaging for crisis communications, in close collaboration with University Police Emergency Operations.
  7. Under the direction of the Associate Vice President of University Affairs participates in external community programs and activities to generate positive attitudes about CSUMB in the community and internally across the CSU system.

Other Functions:

  1. Participates in university task forces and special projects as required.
  2. Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of: advertising, design, branding, marketing, public relations, digital and web content development and communication practices and techniques; effective supervisory principles and practices and organizational management, including budgets, leading a team to meet changing organizational objectives.

Ability to: rapidly become familiar with university-wide programs; provide strong leadership in the development and implementation of university marketing and communications; analyze the implications of various plans and proposals; effectively represent the university in public situations. Edit documents with attention to context and detail and communicate simply, clearly and effectively using a high level of written and oral communication skills.
Create and execute plans for university marketing and communications; watch for trends, make recommendations for innovative change, and implement solutions to complex problems. Research and evaluate alternatives, and determining the most effective course of action; work independently, demonstrate strong organizational skills, meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Supervise the work of six staff and recommend appropriate personnel actions; train, evaluate performance and take corrective action as needed; demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and establish and maintain effective working relationships, partnerships, and coalitions amongst university and external community stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:
Equivalent to a bachelors degree in Business, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing or related field AND a minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible related experience. Proficient in the use of personal computers. Additional experience, which has demonstrated the requisite skills and abilities, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis.

Specialized Skills:


Preferred Qualifications:
Masters Degree or MBA with concentration in marketing, experience in working with creative teams and understanding their needs and resources, ad agency account management experience a plus, TV production, digital and web content development, media planning and buyer, hiring and working with outside creative and production services, creating and deploying online surveys to inform decision making.

This position requires a leader who works with internal and external stakeholders in planning and executing marketing and communications needs across the institution. The selected candidate will have experience in advertising and public relations roles, extensive digital marketing experience and a portfolio with clear expertise in the implementation and evaluation of web and digital-based marketing.Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMBs Vision.

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
