Director of Academic Advising Services

Reports to: Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs

Description: This position is responsible for the development, implementation and ongoing assessment/improvement of the Comprehensive Advising Program.

Responsibilities include:
  • Provide strategic vision for Academic Advising Services and academic advising across campus
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of Academic Advising Services and all services and programs offered by the Center
  • Manage a campus-wide shared model of academic advising
  • Collaborate with Deans, Chairs, faculty, the Director of the Learning Commons and the Director for Student Success to ensure that students receive the best advising possible to empower and retain students
  • Fulfill the mission and goals of Academic Advising Services with attention to the diverse needs of residential, commuter and graduate students
  • Chair and convene Academic Advising Working Group to discuss campus-wide advising initiatives
  • Chair and facilitate Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award nomination/selection process/committee
  • Supervise the Academic Advising Services professional and student staff
  • Provide training, professional development, and ongoing support to faculty and full-time advisors
  • Develop an online advising environment for students
  • Develop and oversee the online advising environment and web-based support materials for advisors
  • Advise exploring and major-changing students
  • Provide first-year advising for all first-year and returning students; as well as first-semester advising to transfer, non-traditional and part-time students
  • Serve as Carroll3 pragmatic Academic Advisor and assist the College of Arts & Sciences, School of Business and Enrollment Management with assessment and tracking of this specific population of students
  • Administer regular advising drop-in' hours throughout the academic year
  • Counsel current students and parents about the advising process
  • Maintain accurate advising notes of student appointments and interactions
  • Manage the day-to-day duties and responsibilities of the Peer Advisor program
  • Serve as direct supervisor of the peer advising team
  • Provide orientation for new Peer Advisors and continued training and development of the peer advising team
  • Work to enhance Peer Advising Program offerings and development of new programs/support along with the changes in Academic Advising Services
  • Provide direct support for the Academic Mentor program including training, development and continued support for (volunteer) mentors of first-year students
  • Oversee all Pre-Health Professions advising efforts in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Academic Advising Services
  • Implement annual assessment/improvement plan
  • Develop and oversee program budget
  • Collaborate with various campus constituents on the Exploring Program, Pre-Nursing Advising Program, Bound for Success Program, multiple grant programs and other academic and social support programs
  • Serve as Academic Advising Services representative to counsel prospective and incoming student at programming events such as Campus Days, Preview Day, and the Student Involvement Fair
  • Organize and facilitate the first-year, non-traditional and transfer student Advising & Registration program
  • Keep apprised of best practices in advising and assessment through active engagement in NACADA and other professional development organizations
  • Maintain effective and collegial working relationships across the university
  • Participate in a flexible schedule over the course of the academic year, at times including evenings and weekend programming efforts
  • Perform other duties as assigned

    Qualifications:

    Education and/or Experience:
  • Master's degree required
  • At least 5 years of demonstrated experience in academic advising and in a college or university setting
  • Experience managing an annual budget preferred

    Technology Skills:
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to use University software to create & maintain student advising records

    Human Relations Skills:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to excellence and accountability in student academic advising.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with leadership, management, students, parents, faculty and staff through a consultative, collaborative and active-problem solving approach.

  • Ability to effectively and professionally communicate with students and their families when appropriate.
