Responsibilities
The Director of Academic Space is responsible for understanding, representing, and planning for the academic and research space needs of the university. This includes, but is not limited to, classrooms, laboratories, faculty/student/staff offices, libraries, and collaborative spaces, as well as the related scientific equipment needed to support an ever-expanding research and teaching portfolio. S/he is expected to shepherd projects through from beginning to end, helping to define scope, evaluate alternatives, and establish appropriate budgets. S/he also oversees the actual construction, renovation and moves of faculty and staff.
The Director of Academic Space Planning is expected to regularly assess the space needs of faculty and related staff. S/he does this through continuous interaction with deans, vice provosts, faculty, and staff of all levels to understand current and upcoming needs related to academic and research initiatives. S/he is responsible for regular allocation review and assignment of space across the various units.
S/he is a key member of the Provost's team and regularly prepares analyses and reports that help guide and influence strategic decision making for the university. S/he is expected to be comfortable digging into the details of and to be conversant in both the data supporting the space/equipment needs and the stories behind the numbers.

Qualifications
Job Requirements
Master's degree (engineering degree preferred) and a minimum of five years of prior facilities or construction experience required, with preference for experience in scientific, medical, academic or research space. Substitution for master's degree possible with bachelor's degree and 8+ years of relevant experience.
Experience balancing the delivery of local needs with bigger picture institutional priorities and constraints. Deep understanding of construction management and space planning. A strategic thinker and doer. Experience analyzing/preparing recommendations for senior leadership. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to work well individually and as a member of a team.
