Essential Functions:
The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. We currently enroll over 24,000 students of which 54% are Latinx, 10% are Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% are Black/African American, 23% are White, 1% American Indian/Alaska Native, and 6% are multiracial. FCC is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Reporting to the Dean of Student Services at Fresno City College, the counselor assignment will include 50% assigned time to Central Valley Promise (CVP) and 50% to general counseling. The counselor will cover a full range of general counseling responsibilities including personal, career, educational, orientation, and transfer counseling with individuals and/or groups, working with probation, athletics, assessment, and outreach. Working assignments in a variety of settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, and on-line or off-campus as needed, the counselor will be responsible for:

Providing comprehensive counseling services for students including academic, career, personal and life transitions counseling on an appointment basis;
Providing group counseling sessions, orientations, and workshops;
Assisting students in clarifying their educational goals, selection of courses, and developing Student Educational Plans (SEPs);
Monitoring student progress through comprehensive electronic data systems;
Mentoring, guiding, and monitoring activities of CVP participants;
Maintaining close working relationships with program and other instructional faculty, feeder high schools, and community resources agencies;
Working with a diverse population of students to emphasize strategies for educational planning and transfer preparation;
Collaborating with instructional and counseling faculty and staff from other departments and programs, including Financial Aid, Admissions and Records, EOPS/CARE, DSP&S, CalWORKS, Puente, IDILE, SYMBAA, USEAA, Veterans/International, TRiO, Student Support Services, College Relations and Outreach, and other programs;
Participating in the implementation of transfer and matriculation activities;
Knowledge and utilization of instructional best practices for students in the classroom;
Utilizing and keeping abreast of advanced counseling methods and student development theories that include integrating technology to support student learning and identification of career objectives;
Providing counseling support specific to the needs of students on academic probation or disqualification;
Conducting intake interviews, assessment interpretation, and use of multiple measures to refer students to the appropriate English and math placements;
Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning; and
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling;

OR
A valid California Community College Credential;

OR
The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom. (NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience in designing and preparing Student Educational Plans (SEPs) for community college students;
Experience teaching courses in career and personal development and/or conducting workshops;
Knowledge of California Community Colleges matriculation processes;
Knowledge of student development theories pertaining to community college students;
Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff, and students;
Ability to develop and maintain counseling notes in Datatel, SARS, or similar electronic record keeping software in a timely and effective manner;
Experience working effectively with student success programs;
Knowledge and experience interpreting and utilizing articulation agreements and transfer requirements for community college students;
Experience in using and interpreting a variety of career assessment tools;
Experience in developing and presenting counseling related workshops and orientation sessions;
Experience participating in outreach activities in the community and on campus;
Experience providing counseling and follow-up services to students on probation or academic dismissal status;
The ability to connect students with on/off campus resources to assist them in their college life management;
Ability to use a broad range of technology pertaining to data collection and analysis for student success;
Ability to work closely with faculty in academic divisions and engage in collegial dialogue on issues of student success;
Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity;
Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment:
181 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary is $54,029 $83,180 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,021 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement. From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview. The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the ecommended candidates. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Student Services and College President for final interviews.
