Position Description:
Powered by an inspiring Founding Vision Statement, California State University, Monterey Bay (WWW.CSUMB.EDU) is a comprehensive, mid-sized four-year university whose staff and faculty help transform student lives by emphasizing project-based learning, requiring service learning, and promoting multicultural and global perspectives on and beyond the campus community. CSUMB is both an MSI and HSI and has a vibrant, diverse student body of nearly 7000 students and growing. Our faculty and staff, many of whom live in campus housing, appreciate living and working about one mile from the shores of the beautiful Monterey Bay. As one of the 23 campuses in the California State University (CSU) system, we offer excellent benefits, including housing, and competitive salaries for our faculty and staff. During our 25th Silver Anniversary Celebration in 2019-20, we will complete two major building projects: the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Student Union. Bay 2030, CSUMB's sustainability initiative is to be carbon neutral.

The Communication Design program (CD) in the School of Computing and Design at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is seeking applications from qualified candidates for an Assistant Professor of Game Design and Interactive Media. This is a full-time, tenure-track position. Candidates with expertise in areas of game design and interactive multimedia design will be considered. Since the CD program offers a Bachelor of Science degree and is integrated with our Computer Science program, we are seeking candidates with strong technical and digital multimedia skills.

We are seeking candidates who are passionate about addressing the challenges and exploring the opportunities facing higher education to join our team that is working on attracting underrepresented, low-income, and first-generation students into the design related computing fields and supporting them through post-graduation success. Along with their commitment to teaching in the CD program, including courses related to their area of expertise, an ideal candidate will be interested in all aspects of an end-to-end CD pathway to support a diverse student body. This begins with students' initial interest in design and digital communication technologies, and moves through college readiness; teaching high quality user experience courses; co-curricular academic, professional, and personal growth support; internships; and finishing with graduation and careers. The selected faculty will join a cross-disciplinary team, building strength via strong regional collaborations with partner organizations from education, industry, and government.

The CD program is interested in reexamining approaches to communication design in higher education, especially as it relates to broadening participation in the field and decreasing cost and time to degree. Unlike most design programs typically housed in Fine Arts departments, our Communication Design program, since its inception, is part of the School of Computing and Design within CSUMB's College of Science. We offer three Concentrations: Game Design, Graphic Design, and Web Design. In addition to a strong foundation in design and communication theories, all of our CD students take programming, computer architecture, and human computer interaction courses. They graduate with portfolios that demonstrate strong technical, creative, and collaborative skills that prepare them to contribute to the evolving and technologically demanding communication design professions. The School of Computing and Design also delivers a baccalaureate degree in Computer Science and a masters of science in Instructional Science and Technology.
