Job Description:
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefit based position with an estimated assignment end date of June 30, 2018.
The Academic Advisor assists the associate dean in undergraduate advising with a variety of activities, primarily advising on-going engineering students with course selection, scheduling, removal of holds, transfer of credit, and other, related problems and conflicts. Assist with the career readiness program including internship tracking. Supervision received: the Academic Advisor works under the general supervision of the associate dean of the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering.

Academic Advising
Advises engineering students regarding course selection and scheduling and removal of holds and resolves problems and conflicts.
Uses Degree Works and Banner Admin to monitor student progress to degree.
Assists students with preparation of Degree Works plans of study.
Provides proper referral of students to appropriate departments when necessary.
Maintains consistent confidentiality due to nature of interactions with students, parents, faculty and other engineering personnel.
Supports advising of transfer students.

Assist in Career Readiness Program
Works directly with the associate dean and the engineering career services coordinator to implement a career readiness program.

Represent the SMSE at campus meetings, events and special projects
Represents the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering on various school and university committees that contribute to sustaining academic excellence as well as creating a more diverse and inclusive USD community.
Provides affiliated and non-affiliated program counseling to students and serves as resource to faculty for related matters.
Presents Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering policy and procedures to newly declared majors and transfer students.
Assumes other duties as assigned by the dean such as preparing accreditation reports and schedules.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree - required
Master's degree – preferred
Requires one year of related experience
Management and leadership training or experience, including excellent organization skills, ability to prioritize and organize work, interpersonal skills, motivating skills, and conflict management skills.
Excellent judgment and critical thinking skills
Ability to work independently.
Problem solving ability.
Decision-making ability, implementation and follow-through skills.
Communication skills including excellent abilities in writing, speaking and listening to foster open communication.
Presentation skills for speaking engagements.
Computer skills – word processing, PowerPoint and spreadsheet program (Excel) skills and Internet usage.
Ability to access and use resources such as websites, databases and media materials including Banner 8 (INB) or Banner 9 (Admin) to access student records needed for advising desired
Knowledge of policies and procedures of USD.
Knowledge of procedures of higher education accrediting organizations.
Ability to interact and be sensitive to individuals of diverse backgrounds.

Salary:
$22.00 per hour. This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefit based position with an estimated assignment end date of June 30, 2018.

Hours: 25 hours per week
