The Opportunity

"Let Knowledge Serve the City" is not just the Portland State University motto, it is a charge to the campus community and its leadership to engage and improve the larger communities in which we live. The Board of Trustees and campus community are excited to recruit and hire the 11th president of Portland State University. The new president of Oregon's most diverse university will have the opportunity to focus the vision and elevate PSU to its leading role in the Portland metropolitan area. We are looking for a fearless advocate of PSU that will lead our campus to define our place in the city, state, and region. Our president will have the opportunity to lead the creation and implementation of a robust strategic plan incorporating a universal commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness, financial sustainability, and service to the Portland metro area.

THE UNIVERSITY

Portland State University(PSU), apublic-servingresearch university, is locatedindowntown Portland, Oregon. Founded in 1946 as a post-secondary educational institution primarily forWorld War IIveterans, it has evolved into a four-year college over the following two decades and was granted university status in 1969. PSU is the only public university in the state of Oregon located in a large metropolitan area. Governed by a Board ofTrustees, PSU isclassifiedamong "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity."

Portland State's colleges offer undergraduate degrees in one hundred twenty-three fields,andpostgraduatedegrees in one hundred seventeen fields. Colleges at Portland State include the School of Business Administration, College of Education, School of Social Work, College of Urban and Public Affairs, College of the Arts, Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science, the Honors College, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Its intercollegiate athletic teams, the Vikings, compete at the NCAA Division I Level, primarily in theBig Sky Conference.

As of 2020, Portland had a population of 652,503,making it thelargest city in Oregon, the 26th-most populatedcity in the United States, the sixth-most populous on theWest Coast, and the second-most populous in the Pacific Northwest, afterSeattle. Approximately 2.5 million people live in thePortland metropolitan area, making it the25th most populousin the United States. About half of Oregon's population resides within the Portland metropolitan area.
