Job Summary
The International Programs Advisor/Coordinator has primary responsibility for student advising, admissions, program promotion, pre-departure and re-entry programming as well as overall program management. The advisor/coordinator plays a key role in forging and maintaining strong global partnerships and programs in their portfolio. The International Programs Advisor/Coordinator shares IPE's commitment to providing inclusive and accessible services and programming to all CoE students regardless of background. The International Programs Advisor/Coordinator will report to the International Programs Assistant Director in the IPE office.

The International Programs in Engineering Office (IPE) has been recognized as a leader in sending engineers abroad. IPE supports CoE students engaged in a range of international experiences including semester exchange, summer study abroad, student organization travel, internships, volunteer, and research abroad. Responsibilities*
Student Advising & Support

  • Advise students on program requirements, applications, and travel proposal process for programs in portfolio
  • Advise students on health and safety, cross-cultural communication, travel planning and logistics, and personal support
  • Maintain accurate student records and prepare reports for areas of responsibility
  • Hold walk-in advising hours and consult with individual students groups, or student organizations by appointment in the IPE Office. Respond to inquiries by email, phone and through in person advising sessions
  • Contribute to overall IPE program marketing, recruitment and outreach initiatives through events, social media, and presentations.
  • Serve as IPE emergency responder on rotation for IPE emergency hone duty

Program Coordination and Outreach
  • Provide overall coordination for a set number of education abroad programs, including research and department sponsored programs
  • Facilitate the application process, application review, and the admissions process for programs in portfolio; Review and make admissions decisions in cooperation with the IPE Assistant Director and/or CoE faculty for select programs
  • Create and maintain detailed print and electronic information on programs and international partners
  • Administer student assessment, gather feedback, and provide suggestions for continued program development and improvement
  • Co-design, prepare, and present at IPE pre-departure orientations and workshops as well as re-entry events
  • Represent IPE to key stakeholders, including current and prospective students, their families and the College of Engineering community

Work / Internship / Volunteer / Program Coordination
  • Collaborate with Engineering Career Resource Center (ECRC) to design and deliver work abroad programming and support; serve as lead coordinator in IPE for WIVRA events and to promote opportunities for engineering students
  • Create and maintain print and web-based advising resources for WIVRA opportunities
  • Provide students support for the necessary legal documentation such as contracts and work visas
  • Provide support and assistance to international employers/agencies who hire our students for internships including student interview coordination
  • Collaborate with ECRC and the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) to facilitate the CoE International Internship Scholarship application process including implementation of pre-departure and re-entry activities for scholarship recipients
  • Coordinate among other WIVRA programs at U-M to optimize outreach to stakeholders

Relationship Management
  • Foster and maintain positive, frequent, and meaningful engagement with stakeholders to support international experiences for students
  • Travel internationally and/or domestically to meet with current partners, attend and present at professional conferences and/or assess current collaborations and partnerships
  • Liaise with stakeholders as necessary to address issues, concerns and discuss program improvement measures

Special Projects/Tasks
  • Keep current in field standards and maintain knowledge of best practices
  • Other projects/tasks as assigned

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience in international program management, student advising or equivalent. The position requires effective communication and public speaking skills, ability to work on several projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks, as well as exercise good judgement and problem-solving skills. Commitment to creating diverse, equitable, and inclusive experiences in a student-centered environment. Sense of humor, flexibility and willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team in a fast-paced student-centered environment is essential. Applicants must have strong computing and technology skills which include working with and learning new software and web-based application systems. Occasional travel and irregular hours (some evenings and weekends) may be required.

Desired Qualifications*
Master's degree, preferably in higher education, counseling or international studies with more than 2 years of demonstrated experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. Experience living/studying/working abroad; experience with advising for outbound international programs, familiarity with higher education systems abroad and knowledge of language(s) other than English. Experience using PeopleSoft and StudioAbroad software. Experience hiring, training and supervising student staff.
