Salary Range: $4,107 - $7,214
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,107 - $4,400 per month, based on qualifications and experience

Organizational Description:

Graduate Laboratory

Located on the northeast edge of the main Fresno State campus, the Graduate Laboratory provides students, faculty, and staff with an array of sophisticated equipment along with technical support for both undergraduate and graduate-level education and research. Within the facility are several smaller labs: They include a main analytics lab for general laboratory work such as plant, soil and water analysis. Other units are a plant science lab for conducting plant tissue analysis; the animal science lab for research such as SEM sample preparation and special projects; a media preparation lab for preparing microbiological media and other chemical solutions; and a soils lab for assaying soil chemical components, moisture and other characteristics.

Jordan Agricultural Research Center

Emphasizing student, faculty and industry research partnerships and made possible by a generous gift from the Bud and Dee Jordan family, the $24.5 million Jordan Agricultural Research Center is the first of its kind on a CSU campus.

Designed to change and grow with the latest scientific needs, the 30,000-foot facility opened in 2016 to link agriculture, science, mathematics and engineering students and faculty with industry leaders to nurture a cohesive research environment.

California Agricultural Technology Institute

The Jordan College supports an array of vibrant research endeavors led by both veteran and newly-appointed faculty and staff research scientists. A major campus-based program operates under the California Agricultural Technology Institute (CATI). The institute is dedicated to improving the economic efficiency, productivity and profitability of California agriculture and its allied industries. The Institute includes three centers:

    University Agricultural Laboratory

    Our 1,000-acre on-campus University Agricultural Laboratory gives Jordan College students, classes and faculty unparalleled access to the nation's most productive and diversified agricultural area through study, research and work experience.

    The on-campus animal units (beef cattle, dairy, swine, poultry, quarter horses, sheep) are managed 24/7 by students, staff and faculty. The UAL also includes table, raisin and wine grape vineyards, tree fruit and nut orchards, vegetable and row crops crops (that produce our state-wide renowned sweet corn), a horticulture unit, greenhouse and tissue culture laboratory).

    Fresh student-made products from these units and our award-winning Fresno State Winery, dairy, creamery and food processing centers are available year-round at our Gibson Farm Market on campus.

    The UAL's 20 working enterprises also host 80 class sections from our different departments and utilize 130 students who work approximately 80,000 hours each year. The orchards and vineyards also all utilize drip irrigation technology that showcase the latest industry advances often tied to partnerships created by our campus irrigation research centers.

    Overview:

    Under the general supervision of the Jordan College Dean, this technician would provide comprehensive instructional support services for laboratory sections of undergraduate courses in the departments of Plant Science, Animal Science, Food Science and Nutrition and Viticulture and Enology and for the inter-departmental, graduate Lab Techniques course.

    Position Summary:

  • Purchasing of chemical reagents, preparation of chemical solutions, development and testing of laboratory protocols and lab set-up prior to class.
  • Training graduate students on laboratory analyses specific to their research area and locating suitable instrumentation, as well as the development of appropriate quality control procedures.
  • Trouble-shooting and/or performing minor repairs on laboratory instrumentation and field equipment and in the case of new equipment, assisting with installation and the development of proper operating procedures.
  • Responsible for maintenance and major repairs of laboratory equipment, in cooperation with skilled equipment technicians.
  • Maintaining refrigeration, environmental control, power, and/or backup support for sensitive materials and equipment located at the Graduate Laboratory.
  • Providing secondary support for research carried out at the Jordan Agricultural Research Center (JARC), and working in cooperation with the technician supporting the JARC, as needed.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and methods related to performing support services
  • Knowledge of the principles, information, methods and techniques related to discipline to which assigned
  • Knowledge of the materials and supplies related to the curriculum, the characteristics and uses
  • Ability to:
    o Plan, organize and schedule work
    o Operate and repair technical and scientific equipment
    o Coordinate support service to meet a comprehensive variety of needs
    o Develop off-campus resources related to the discipline for obtaining materials or equipment
    o Effectively train and supervise students to assist with laboratory support tasks
    o Assist faculty in developing new laboratory exercises or approaches involving laboratory equipment
    o Operate and maintain research equipment in the college
    o Develop analytical protocols and standard operating procedures (SOP's)
    o Develop quality control and quality assurance procedures
    o Maintain records, including an equipment inventory
    o Upgrade laboratory equipment and associated software
    o Work with technicians in other Colleges to share resources
  • A history of regular attendance and positive performance evaluations

    Education and Experience:

  • Equivalent to four years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or requiring equipment in a discipline related to specialty area to which assigned, or
  • Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience, or
  • Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the specialty area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

    Preferred Skills:

  • Sufficient knowledge of the principles and practices of laboratory analysis and equipment operation and maintenance to allow the individual to assume operational responsibility for the Graduate Laboratory and teaching labs belonging to the College.
  • A Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline which includes laboratory work in its curriculum; ideally, Chemistry or Biochemistry; or Biological or Agricultural Sciences if a strong background in analytical instrumentation can be demonstrated either in the academic program or work experience.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in research laboratory work related to agricultural, environmental or food sciences or technology; or instructional support related to these areas.
  • Sufficient knowledge of the principles and practices of laboratory analysis and equipment operation and maintenance to allow the individual to assume operational responsibility for the Graduate Laboratory and teaching labs belonging to the College.
