Position Summary:
North Seattle College is recruiting for a full time, exempt Director of Advising position.

This position is responsible for directing and supervising the overall functions and programming of NSC Advising.

The Director collaborates with the Dean of Student Success Services and personnel in Admissions/Registration/Credentials, Testing, Entry Services, Financial Aid Services, Student Life, Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, PIO, International Services, BAS programming, Workforce Education, Institutional Effectiveness and Instructional deans and divisions in providing comprehensive advising services for students as it relates to the mission of North Seattle College and the Seattle Colleges District Strategic Plan. The Director works in close partnership with Seattle Colleges District advising directors.

This position may work occasional evening hours, as program needs demand.

Essential Functions:
  • Oversee the daily and overall operations of NSC Advising, including the implementation and assessment of services and programming related to retention and completion for college transfer, professional-technical, international, Running Start and Workforce students.
  • Lead advising staff in the implementation and assessment of advising services and programming such as educational planning, advising interventions, advising/instructional liaison model, guided pathways, student success technologies, new student orientation, peer advising navigators, completion coaching, college transfer and professional-technical degree and transfer workshops, newsletters, classroom presentations, etc. to promote student retention and completion.
  • Responsible for the development and revision of advising resources and promotional materials such as web pages, brochures, degree workshops, student degree planning guides, etc.
  • Provide oversight for advising information flow to students, staff, faculty and administrators, PIO, and the Seattle Colleges District, i.e. the Seattle College District catalog, changes in the AA and other transfer and professional technical degrees, transfer and baccalaureate institution requirements.
  • Oversee the implementation of Student Progress policy and programming for students on academic alert, probation, and suspension.
  • Collaborate with faculty on development of new degrees.
  • Represent NSC as a liaison to other institutions of higher education regarding institutional policies, degree, certificate, and program requirements and collaborate on the articulation of transfer credits, policies and agreements to facilitate the transfer of students between NSC and universities.
  • Serve as a resource for staff/students with degree problems or challenges.
  • Provide student advising and orientation assistance as needed.
  • Provide overall management and supervision for advisors/student success specialists and classified staff including hiring, training, evaluation, performance reviews, scheduling, etc.
  • Responsible for budget planning and management.
  • Serve on appropriate committees such as CAS-Curriculum and Academic Standards Committee, Washington State Advising & Counseling Council, SCD ctcLink committee and NSC Student Development Council.
  • Represent NSC and provide expertise regarding program requirements and transfer articulation/advising issues for college and district projects, meetings, and events.
  • Participate in appropriate college, district and state committees or list serves to maintain current knowledge of advising best practices and state higher education laws and policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Education, Experience & Abilities:
  • Master's degree or equivalent in Education, Student Development, Counseling, Public Affairs or Higher Education Administration.
  • Three years minimum experience administering student services programs in higher education; including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Experience working with student advising and retention programs, advising best practices, innovations and technologies..
  • Proven organizational, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively and fostering communication and collaboration across departments.
  • Proven leadership, supervisory and team building skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated; ability to work independently.
