Assistant Vice President for Advancement Strategy and Operations

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Advancement Strategy and Operations provides strategic and operational leadership to the areas of Advancement that include communications, alumni engagement, gratitude outreach, advancement services, donor relations, and prospect research with the goal of supporting the primary objectives of the Advancement Office: fundraising and alumni engagement. The newly created position of AVP will build a team of individual contributors (program directors/ coordinators) into a cohesive Advancement Strategy and Operations team to support and strengthen the institution's advancement efforts. The selected incumbent will inspire creativity and efficiency through the application of AI and machine learning throughout advancement functions. This position supervises staff, works collaboratively with all members of the Advancement team, and university colleagues, as well as university leadership as appropriate. The AVP's external responsibilities will include managing a portfolio of prospects, engaging with members of the Foundation Board, and representing SUNY Empire at regional and community events.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management
  • Oversee a team of advancement operations and strategic functions that include the newly formed Advancement Strategy and Operations team comprising communications, alumni engagement, gratitude outreach, advancement services, donor relations, and prospect research.
  • Mentor this team into a cohesive, forward-thinking, strategic unit that facilitates a successful fundraising program.
  • Introduce AI tools into current processes to increase efficiencies and support problem-solving in new and creative ways, specifically to increase our fundraising results and alumni engagement.
  • Support the performance management and professional development of the individual team members.
  • Serve as a member of the university's extended cabinet.

Fundraising and Donor Engagement
  • Partner with senior leadership and front-line fundraisers to design and execute fundraising plans.
  • Contribute to annual and capital campaign strategies.
  • Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors.

Strategic Planning
  • Implement advancement strategic priorities aligned with institutional goals.
  • Oversee fundraising progress through accurate and insightful reporting, for internal departmental use (including tracking and analytics) as well as for board and university leadership and external audiences (e.g. donors).
  • Collaborate with academic and administrative leaders and university colleagues to advance a culture of philanthropy.
  • Represent Advancement on the university's Strategic Plan implementation team.

Operations and Collaboration
  • Provide leadership and guidance over the Advancement Services team throughout the implementation of a new CRM. Provide leadership and best practice knowledge of related add-on software to facilitate donations, registrations, prospect research, prospect strategy, moves management, communications, and engagement.
  • Ensure effective stewardship, reporting, and donor recognition through partnership with Finance, Marketing, Communications, Decision Support, Student Success, and Office of Academic Affairs, and the Veterans and Military Resource Center, among other SUNY Empire departments.
  • Build relationships across campus to help align university program needs with fundraising opportunities.
  • Represent the advancement division at events and in the community as needed.


Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in advancement, not-for-profit fundraising, or related fields; higher education preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in managing staff and advancement programs.
  • Familiarity with CRMs and donation platforms.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex environment

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's or terminal degree from an accredited institution.
  • Experience in leveraging machine learning tools to identify opportunities, enhance operational efficiency, and solve problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure and steward major gifts.

Special Information:
  • This position is located in Saratoga Springs, NY.
  • Occasional travel may be required to fulfill department and university-wide commitments.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.


Additional Information:
Rank/Salary: Management/Confidential / $125,000-$140,000, dependent upon experience and qualifications.
