Responsibilities
The College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) Advising Center welcomes applications for the position of Academic Advisor from individuals who are passionate about helping students succeed. The academic advisor empowers CSET students to achieve academic success and attain their goals by engaging them in a teaching and learning focused relationship, assisting them in the development of academic skills and connecting them with campus resources.
  • Advise Students on academic issues, general education, & major requirements.
  • Advise CSET students on academic warning.
  • Process & interpret student records.
  • Serve as Site Coordinator for the MSU chapter of the Northstar STEM Alliance program.
  • Assist with the coordination of the CSET scholarship program.
  • Other projects and work associated with the Advising Center.


Required Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in counseling & student personnel, higher education administration, or other closely related field.
  • One (1) year full time experience in academic advising or in the provision of support services directly related to academic advising (i.e. admissions, registrar, career development, or orientation, etc.).
--OR--
  • Three (3) years full-time academic advising experience (or similar) and a Bachelor's Degree in a discipline of Science, Engineering or Technology.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
  • Developed communication and interpersonal skills necessary for advising of students electronically, in one-on-one, small group and large group settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new information quickly and to interpret information with attention to detail and accuracy including an ability to acquire and develop knowledge of relevant academic programs, policies, procedures and resources.
  • Experience with ISRS or similar student records systems and other technologies used in the provision of academic advising.
  • Experience working with students in STEM majors.
  • Demonstrated success providing developmental and intrusive advising services to students, including those who are struggling academically.
  • Ability to promote student learning, development and success by applying varied advising approaches to diverse student situations.
  • Demonstrated success providing support services and programming for students of color and other groups who are typically underrepresented in STEM fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide classroom instruction relevant to academic advising.
